Styrax, the balsam refined from the trunk of Liquidambar orientalis Mill. has a variety of applications in the perfumery and medical industry, especially for use in traditional Chinese medicine. However, the resources of styrax are in shortage due to being endangered of this plant. Grafting can improve the adaptability of plants to unfavorable environmental conditions. We tried to graft the L. orientalis Mill. on L. formosana Hance which was widely distributed in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces of China in an attempt to obtain styrax from grafted L. orientalis Mill. (grafted styrax, SG). Whether SG can become an alternative application of commercially available styrax (SC) need be further investigated. The components of SG were analyzed by GC-MS, and the results showed that the chromatograms of SG, SC, and styrax standard (SS) were consistent. The ration of 12 major chemical components based peak area in SG, SC, and SS were 93.95%, 94.24%, and 95.86% respectively. The assessment of toxicity, antithrombotic activity, and myocardial infarction protection of SG and SC was evaluated by using the zebrafish model, the results showed that SG and SC have the similar toxicological properties as evidenced by acute toxicity test, developmental toxicity and teratogenicity, and long-term toxicity test. Both SG and SC significantly decreased the thrombosis and increased blood flow velocity of zebrafish induced by adrenaline hydrochloride, inhibited myocardial apoptosis, myocardial infarction and myocardial inflammation in zebrafish induced by isoproterenol hydrochloride. Moreover, SG had an obvious improvement effect on cardiac output, while SC has no effect. Collectively, SG is similar to SC in chemical composition, toxicological properties, antithrombotic activity, and myocardial infarction protection effects, and may be used as a substitute for styrax to reduce the collection for wild L. orientalis Mill. and increase the available styrax resources.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a brittle biodegradable thermoplastic due to its relatively high glass transition temperature (Tg âˆ¼ 60 °C). This Tg limits the using of PLA in flexible applications, for example packaging films. In this study, it has been shown for the first time that the Liquidambar Orientalis (LO) oil as a nontoxic, environmentally friendly, and green additive can be successfully used as a natural, renewable, and sustainable plasticizer to produce flexible PLA parts and improve its thermal and physical properties and application potential. Natural oil obtained from Liquidambar Orientalis tree was introduced into PLA (as 10, 20, and 30 phr) by melt compounding (MC) and solution mixing (SM) methods. Effect of LO oil amount on the glass transition temperature, melt and cold crystallization behaviors, and degree of crystallinity values of samples were determined with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In addition, solid state viscoelastic properties of PLA films were also characterized with dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) tests. Results showed that LO oil significantly reduced the Tg and storage modulus (E') value of PLA and LO oil showed an excellent plasticizing effect for PLA due to reducing strong hydrogen bonds and secondary interactions between PLA chains.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the effect of extract of Styrax (ES) on myocardial ischemic injury and its molecular mechanism, indirectly providing a theoretical basis for the development of ES. METHODS: In order to assess the impact of ES treatment on ischemic heart disease, both a left anterior descending ligation-induced myocardial infarction (MI) model and an ischemia/hypoxia (I/H)-induced H9c2 cell injury model have been constructed. Specifically, Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to the following groups (n = 8) and administered intragastrically once a day for seven consecutive days: Sham group, MI group, ES-L (0.2 g/kg) group, ES-M (0.4 g/kg) group, ES-H (0.8 g/kg) group, and trimetazidine (TMZ, 0.02 g/kg) group. The cardiac functions and biochemical assessment of rats were detected. Then, we validated experimentally the targets and mechanism of ES on these pathological processes in I/H-induced H9c2 cell injury model. KEY FINDINGS: These results showed that different doses of ES (0.2 g/kg, 0.4 g/kg, 0.8 g/kg, intragastric) significantly improved myocardial structure and function when compared to the MI group. The results of 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC), hematoxylin-eosin, and masson staining indicated that ES could significantly reduce infarct size, inhibit myocardium apoptosis, and decrease myocardial fibrosis. Moreover, ES distinctly suppressed the serum levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), cardiac troponin T (cTnT), and creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB), alleviated myocardial mitochondrial morphology, and stimulated adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production, increased the level of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), complex I and complex V activity. Different doses of ES (5 µg/ml, 10 µg/ml, 20 µg/ml) also improved cardiomyocyte morphology and decreased the apoptosis rate in H9c2 cells that had been exposed to I/H. Furthermore, the results of western blotting and qRT-PCR indicated that ES promoted the expression of proteins and mRNA related to energy metabolism, including phosphorylated adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase (p-AMPK), peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma coactivator 1 alpha (PCG-1α), nuclear respiratory factor 1, and mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM). Mechanically, after the administration of Compound C (dorsomorphin), an AMPK inhibitor, these effects of myocardial protection produced by ES were reversed. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, these results demonstrated that ES could improve myocardial mitochondrial function and reduce ischemic injury by activating AMPK/PCG-1α signaling pathway, while indicating its potential advantages as a dietary supplement.

RESUMO

A new mealybug species, Ceroputo liquidambaris Zhang & Watson sp. n. (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Pseudococcidae), collected on leaves and branches of Liquidambar formosana (Altingiaceae), is described and illustrated from Jiangxi, China. The new species differs from all other known species of Ceroputo in having dorsal multilocular disc pores. Notes on some aspects of Ceroputo pilosellae Sulc collected in China and a key to the adult females of Ceroputo species are provided.

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro dose-dependent effects of sigla storax (Styrax liquidus) on rumen microbiota and rumen microbial fermentation in comparison to monensin as a positive control. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study was carried out using a rumen simulation model (Rusitec). Treatments consisted of no additive (control), 10 mg l-1 of monensin sodium salt, 100 mg l-1 (Low-Sigla), and 500 mg l-1 (High-Sigla) of sigla storax (n = 6/treatment). In addition to rumen fermentation characteristics, rumen microbial composition was investigated using 16S rRNA sequencing. The methane variables and the acetate to propionate ratio decreased in the both High-Sigla and monensin groups (P < 0.05). High-Sigla had no effect on ammonia, total SCFA and nutrition degradation, while monensin decreased these parameters (P < 0.05). Unlike monensin, the sigla storax treatments did not affect the alpha or beta diversity indexes of the microbiota. The relative abundance of Methanomethylophilaceae and Ruminococcaceae decreased with High-Sigla and monensin (P < 0.05), and Atopobiaceae and Eggerthellaceae decreased with the both doses of sigla storax as well as monensin treatments (P < 0.05). Syntrophococcus, DNF00809, and Kandleria were among the genera that most decreased with High-Sigla and monensin (Q < 0.07) and were strongly positively correlated with methane production (r = 0.52-0.56). CONCLUSIONS: The high dose of sigla storax (500 mg l-1) decreased methane in the rumen ecosystem without adverse effects on nutrient degradation and SCFA production, and without dramatically impacting the microbial composition. Sigla storax might be a novel feed additive to mitigate methane in cattle.

The medicinal plant of Styrax liquidus (ST) (sweet gum balsam) which extracted from Liquidambar orientalis Mill tree, was loaded into the 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA)/chitosan (CS) based 3D printed scaffolds to investigate its wound healing and closure effect, in this study. The morphological and chemical properties of the ST loaded 3D printed scaffolds with different concentrations (1 %, 2 %, and 3 % wt) were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), respectively. In addition, the mechanical and thermal properties of the materials were investigated by Tensile test and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), respectively. The antimicrobial activities of the ST loaded 3D printed scaffolds and their incubation media in the PBS (pH 7.4, at 37 °C for 24 h) were investigated on two Gram-positive and two Gram-negative standard pathogenic bacteria with the agar disc diffusion method. The colorimetric MTT assay was used to determine the cell viability of human fibroblast cells (CCD-1072Sk) incubated with free ST, ST loaded, and unloaded 3D printed scaffolds. The 1 % and 2 % (wt) ST loaded PLA/CS/ST 3D printed scaffolds showed an increase in the cell number. Annexin V/PI double stain assay was performed to test whether early or late apoptosis was induced in the PLA/CS/1 % ST and PLA/CS/2 % ST loaded groups and the results were consistent with the MTT assay. Furthermore, a wound healing assay was carried out to investigate the effect of ST loaded 3D printed scaffolds on wound healing in CCD-1072Sk cells. The highest wound closure compared to the control group was observed on cells treated with PLA/CS/1 % ST for 72 h. According to the results, novel biocompatible ST loaded 3D printed scaffolds with antimicrobial effect can be used as wound healing material for potential tissue engineering applications.

Liquidambar formosana Hance is a pinene-rich deciduous plant species in the Altingiaceae family that is used as a medicinal plant in China. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying α-pinene and ß-pinene biosynthesis in L. formosana leaves remain unknown. Here, a joint analysis of the volatile compounds and transcriptomes of L. formosana leaves was performed to comprehensively explore the terpene synthase (TPS) that may participate in α-pinene and ß-pinene biosynthesis. Headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) jointly detected volatile L. formosana leaves. Trees with high and low levels of both α-pinene and ß-pinene were defined as the H group and L group, respectively. RNA sequencing data revealed that DXR (1-deoxy-D-xylulose-5-phosphate reductoisomerase), HDS [(E)-4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-2-eny-l-diphosphate synthase], and TPS may be the major regulators of monoterpenoid biosynthesis. We identified three TPSs (LfTPS1, LfTPS2, and LfTPS3), which are highly homologous to α-pinene and ß-pinene synthases of other species in phylogenetic analysis. Four TPS genes (LfTPS1, LfTPS2, LfTPS4, LfTPS5) may be critically involved in the biosynthesis and regulation of α-pinene and ß-pinene in L. formosana. Bioinformatic and transcriptomic results were verified using quantitative real-time PCR. We identified LfTPS1, LfTPS2 as candidate genes for α-pinene and ß-pinene biosynthesis that significantly improve the yield of beneficial terpenoids.

Liquidambar styraciflua L. is an aromatic species, popularly used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat diarrhea, dysentery, coughs, and skin sores. The present study was designed to investigate the chemical composition and biological potential of extracts obtained from the fruits of this plant. For the chemical evaluation, it was used mainly liquid and gas chromatography, plus NMR, and colorimetric methods. The aqueous extract (EA) originated two other fractions: an aqueous (P-EA) and an ethanolic (S-EA). The three extracts were composed of proteins, phenolic compounds, and carbohydrates in different proportions. The analyses showed that the polysaccharide extract (P-EA) contained pectic polysaccharides, such as acetylated and methyl esterified homogalacturonans together with arabinogalactan, while the fraction S-EA presented phenolic acids and terpenes such as gallic acid, protocathecuic acid, liquidambaric acid, combretastatin, and atractyloside A. EA, P-EA, and S-EA showed antioxidant activity, with IC50 values of 4.64 µg/mL, 16.45 µg/mL, and 3.67 µg/mL, respectively. The cytotoxicity followed the sequence S-EA > EA > P-EA, demonstrating that the toxic compounds were separated from the non-toxic ones by ethanol precipitation. While the fraction S-EA is very toxic to any cell line, the fraction P-EA is a promising candidate for studies against cancer due to its high toxicity to tumoral cells and low toxicity to normal cells.

A Liquidambar formosana plantation is a kind of fast-grown forest in the subtropical region, providing a variety of ecosystem services such as superior wood, carbon fixation and oxygen release, and biodiversity maintenance. However, the ecological service function value of Liquidambar formosana plantations is not clear. To gain insights into the characteristics and importance of its ecological and economic benefits, the Liquidambar formosana plantation in the Tianjiling Forest Farm of Changsha City was taken as the specific research object in this paper. The ecological service function evaluation index system for Liquidambar formosana plantations was established based on the relevant research worldwide and the actual situation. The market value method, shadow engineering method, carbon tax method, and other environmental economics methods were used to estimate the value of seven ecological service functions (including organic matter production, carbon fixation and oxygen release, water conservation, soil conservation, soil improvement, air purification, and biodiversity maintenance) of the forest of Liquidambar formosana. The results indicated that the total economic value of ecological service function provided by the Liquidambar formosana plantation of Changsha was 103,277.82 RMB/(hm2·a), and the indirect economic value was 8.47 times that of the direct economic value. Among the seven ecological service functions, the value of carbon fixation and oxygen release was the highest (36,703.33 RMB·hm-2·a-1), thus suggesting that the Liquidambar formosana plantation had strong photosynthesis and significant carbon fixation. This study directly reflects the value of forest ecological service function in the form of currency, which is beneficial to provide more insights into forest ecological service function so as to provide basic data and a scientific basis for the protection, construction, and promotion of the sustainable utilization and development of urban forest resources.

Liquidambar formosana Hance has a highly ornamental value as an important urban greening tree species with bright and beautiful leaf color. To gain insights into the physiological and molecular mechanisms of L. formosana leaf color change, the leaves of three different clones were sampled every ten days from October 13, 2019, five times in total, which are S1, S2, S3, S4 and S5. Transcriptome sequencing was performed at S1 and S4. The chlorophyll content of the three clones decreased significantly, while the anthocyanins content of the three clones increased significantly in the coloring stage. The anthocyanins content of clone 2 was far more than that of the other two clones throughout the period of leaf color change. The transcriptome analysis showed that six DEGs related to anthocyanins biosynthesis, including CHS (chalcone synthase), CHI (chalcone isomerase), F3'H (flavonoid 3'-hydroxylase), DFR (dihydroflavonol 4-reductase), ANS (anthocyanidin synthase) and FLS (flavonol synthase), were found in three clones. Clone 2 has another three DEGs related to anthocyanins biosynthesis, including PAL (Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase), F3'5'H (flavonoid 3',5'-hydroxylase) and UFGT (flavonoid 3-O-glucosyltransferase). We lay a foundation for understanding the molecular regulation mechanism of the formation of leaf color by exploring valuable genes, which is helpful for L. formosana breeding.

Liquidambar orientalis Mill (LOM), is an endemic species having a local distribution in the southwestern coastal district of Turkey. Styrax liquidus gum (SLG), is a gum-like resinous which exudates in response to injury of the trunk of LOM. The aim of the study was to investigate the cytotoxic effects and the molecular mechanisms of the ethanolic SLG extract in human prostate cancer cells. GC-MS analysis was performed to identify the volatile compound composition. Cytotoxicity was determined by XTT analysis. Apoptosis and necrosis were evaluated via ELISA assay. Autophagic cell death was detected via monodansylcadaverine (MDC) staining and by measuring the levels of LC3I and LC3II. The protein levels of p-PI3K, p-Akt and p-mTOR were evaluated by western blot analysis. In the present study, it is shown that the SLG extract containing a considerable amount of ravidomycin derivate induced autophagic cell death in prostate cancer cells via inhibiting the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway.

Liquidambar orientalis Mill. var. orientalis (Hammamelidaceae) commonly known as oriental sweet gum is a medicinal plant endemic to Turkey, and used for treatment of wounds such as ulcers, gastritis and skin diseases. However, there are only a limited number of studies on the anticancer properties of this plant. The aim of this study is to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms of L. orientalis in colorectal cancer cell lines and to reveal the active therapeutic components. Antioxidant, anti-proliferative, anti-invasive and apoptotic effects were investigated for determining biological activities. The phytochemical profile and quantitation assays were carried out by using HPLC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS. The results demonstrated that leaf methanol extract (LM) of L. orientalis has the highest cytotoxic activity in HCT-116 (IC50 27.80 µg/mL) and HT-29 (IC50 43.13 µg/mL) cell lines as compared to the other extracts tested. Regarding chemical composition, quercetin 3-glucoside (61.005 ± 1.527 mg/g extract), chlorogenic acid (31.627 ± 0.970 mg/g extract), pyrogallol (9.950 ± 0.001 mg/g extract), epigallocatechin gallate (9.671 ± 0.004 mg/g extract), apigenin 7-O-glucoside (2.687 ± 0.027 mg/g extract), gallic acid (2.137 ± 0.012 mg/g extract), genistin (1.270 ± 0.027 mg/g extract), luteolin (0.055 ± 0.0005 mg/g extract) and kaempferol (0.506 ± 0.007 mg/g extract) were identified as the major phytochemical compounds. Our results showed that LM extract exhibited In Vitro cytotoxic and apoptotic properties.

Canopy structure-the size and distribution of tree crowns and the spatial and temporal distribution of leaves within them-exerts dominant control over primary productivity, transpiration and energy exchange. Stand structure-the spatial arrangement of trees in the forest (height, basal area and spacing)-has a strong influence on forest growth, allocation and resource use. Forest response to elevated atmospheric CO2 is likely to be dependent on the canopy and stand structure. Here, we investigated elevated CO2 effects on the forest structure of a Liquidambar styraciflua L. stand in a free-air CO2 enrichment experiment, considering leaves, tree crowns, forest canopy and stand structure. During the 12-year experiment, the trees increased in height by 5 m and basal area increased by 37%. Basal area distribution among trees shifted from a relatively narrow distribution to a much broader one, but there was little evidence of a CO2 effect on height growth or basal area distribution. The differentiation into crown classes over time led to an increase in the number of unproductive intermediate and suppressed trees and to a greater concentration of stand basal area in the largest trees. A whole-tree harvest at the end of the experiment permitted detailed analysis of canopy structure. There was little effect of CO2 enrichment on the relative leaf area distribution within tree crowns and there was little change from 1998 to 2009. Leaf characteristics (leaf mass per unit area and nitrogen content) varied with crown depth; any effects of elevated CO2 were much smaller than the variation within the crown and were consistent throughout the crown. In this young, even-aged, monoculture plantation forest, there was little evidence that elevated CO2 accelerated tree and stand development, and there were remarkably small changes in canopy structure. Questions remain as to whether a more diverse, mixed species forest would respond similarly.

Xylosandrus compactus (Eichhoff) (Col.: Curculionidae, Scolytinae) is an ambrosia beetle species native to subtropical Eastern Asia, with great concern due to its high invasive ability. This species has invaded 54 countries worldwide, including 4 European countries (Italy, France, Greece, and Spain); it was detected in Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain) in October 2019. In the present work, X. compactus is recorded for the first time in the Iberian Peninsula (Girona province, NE Spain); specimens were collected in Banyoles (August 2020, attacking twigs of Laurus nobilis and Liquidambar styraciflua) and Platja d'Aro (October 2020, attacking twigs of L. nobilis). In certain plants, leaf coloration occurs in young and senescent leaves; however, it is unclear whether these two developmental stages are controlled by the same regulatory mechanisms. Formosan sweet gum (Liquidambar formosana Hance) is a subtropical deciduous tree species that possesses attractive autumnal leaf coloration. The color of young leaves is closer to purplish red, while senescent leaves are more orange-red to dark red. It was confirmed that delphinidin and cyanidin are the two anthocyanidins that contribute to the color of Formosan sweet gum leaves, and the content of different anthocyanins influences the appearance of color. To elucidate the regulation of anthocyanidin biosynthesis, recombinant DIHYDROFLAVONOL-4-REDUCTASEs (LfDFR1 and LfDFR2) (EC 1.1.1.234) were produced, and their substrate acceptability was investigated both in vitro and in planta. The functions of flavanones and dihydroflavonols modification by FLAVONOID 3' HYDROXYLASE (LfF3'H1) (EC 1.14.14.82) and FLAVONOID 3'5' HYDROXYLASE (LfF3'5'H) (EC 1.14.14.81) were verified using a transient overexpression experiment in Nicotiana benthamiana. The results showed that LfMYB5 induced LfF3'5'H and LfMYB123 induced both LfF3'H1 and LfDFR1 in spring when the leaves were expanding, whereas LfMYB113 induced LfF3'H1, LfDFR1, and LfDFR2 in late autumn to winter when the leaves were undergoing leaf senescence. In conclusion, the color variation of Formosan sweet gum in young and senescent leaves was attributed to the composition of anthocyanidins through the transcriptional regulation of LfF3'H1 and LfF3'5'H by LfMYB5, LfMYB113, and LfMYB123.

Several species of soil free-living saprotrophs can sometimes establish biotrophic symbiosis with plants, but the basic biology of this association remains largely unknown. Here, we investigate the symbiotic interaction between a common soil saprotroph, Clitopilus hobsonii (Agaricomycetes), and the American sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua). The colonized root cortical cells were found to contain numerous microsclerotia-like structures. Fungal colonization led to increased plant growth and facilitated potassium uptake, particularly under potassium limitation (0.05 mM K+ ). The expression of plant genes related to potassium uptake was not altered by the symbiosis, but colonized roots contained the transcripts of three fungal genes with homology to K+ transporters (ACU and HAK) and channel (SKC). Heterologously expressed ChACU and ChSKC restored the growth of a yeast K+ -uptake-defective mutant. Upregulation of ChACU transcript under low K+ conditions (0 and 0.05 mM K+ ) compared to control (5 mM K+ ) was demonstrated in planta and in vitro. Colonized plants displayed a larger accumulation of soluble sugars under 0.05 mM K+ than non-colonized plants. The present study suggests reciprocal benefits of this novel tree-fungus symbiosis under potassium limitation mainly through an exchange of additional carbon and potassium between both partners.

Phytochemical investigation of the resin of Liquidambar formosana Hanc led to the separation and identification of five undescribed pentacyclic triterpenoids, including two lupane type, one taraxerane type, and two oleanane type triterpenoids, in addition to ten known analogues. Structures and relative or absolute configurations were elucidated by intensive spectroscopic methods, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their anti-angiogenic effects in vitro against VEGF-induced endothelial cell proliferation and migration in HUVECs. Among them, (5R, 8R, 9R, 10R, 13S, 14R, 17R, 18R, 19S)-17,18-epoxy-17,18-seco-28-norlupa-17- hydroxy-20 (29) -ene-3-one, (5R, 8R, 9R, 10R, 13S, 14R, 17S, 18S, 19S, 20S)-17, 20-peroxy-28- norlupa -29 -hydroxy- 3-one, 11α,12α:13ß,28-diepoxyoleanane- 3-one, 28-norlup-20 (29)-ene- 3ß,17ß-diol, liquidambaric lactone and 13,28-epoxy-11- oleanene- 3-one significantly inhibited VEGF-induced HUVECs proliferation with IC50 values ranging from 1.64 ± 0.36 to 7.06 ± 0.28 µM. In addition, they also effectively decreased VEGF-induced cell migration with IC50 values ranging from 1.57 ± 0.60 to 4.77 ± 0.62 µM. The structure-activity relationship of these compounds is discussed. The anti-angiogenic property of (5R, 8R, 9R, 10R, 13S, 14R, 17R, 18R, 19S)-17,18-epoxy-17,18-seco-28-norlupa-17- hydroxy-20 (29) -ene-3-one is mediated by the VEGFR2 - AKT signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Mastisol Liquid Adhesive is widely used on the skin, especially after surgical procedures. It contains gum mastic, gum storax, methyl salicylate, and ethanol. OBJECTIVE: The aims of the study were to review our experience patch testing patients allergic to Mastisol and to assess coreacting substances. METHODS: We identified 18 patients who were allergic to Mastisol. Most of these had a history of postoperative or cardiac electrode dermatitis and underwent patch testing with multiple surgically related substances, including ingredients of Mastisol, compound tincture of benzoin, and fragrance-related ingredients and botanicals. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Among Mastisol-allergic patients, 13 (72%) of 18 were allergic to gum mastic, whereas 7 (44%) of 16 were allergic to gum storax. There was frequent coreactivity with various fragrance-related materials, including Majantol, Styrax benzoin, Myroxylon balsamum, Myroxylon pereirae, propolis, and others. Two gum mastic-allergic patients had positive patch tests with hydroperoxides of linalool and several other linalool-containing essential oils. As gum mastic contains linalool, it may explain some gum mastic reactions. Among patients without a history of postoperative contact dermatitis, 1 (0.4%) of 250 was patch test positive for gum mastic. This patient had allergic contact dermatitis from fragrances, so the gum mastic reaction was likely a true-positive relevant reaction.

BACKGROUND: Liquidambaris Fructus is the infructescences of Liquidambar formosana Hance and it has been used to treat some breast disease in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In the previous study we found the anti-breast cancer effect of triterpenoid in Liquidambaris Fructus. This study is a further investigation of the triterpenoids in Liquidambaris Fructus and aims to identify their anti-breast cancer targets, meanwhile, to estimate the rationality of the traditional applications of Liquidambaris Fructus. METHODS: Triterpenoids in Liquidambaris Fructus were isolated and their structures were identified by NMR spectrums. Potential targets of these triterpenoids were predicted using a reverse pharmacophore mapping strategy. Associations between these targets and the therapeutic targets of breast cancer were analyzed by constructing protein-protein interaction network, and targets played important roles in the network were identified using Molecular Complex Detection method. Binding affinity between the targets and triterpenoids was studied using molecular docking method. Gene ontology enrichment analysis was conducted to reveal the biological process and signaling pathways that the identified targets were involved in. RESULTS: Thirteen triterpenoids were identified and 6 of them were the first time isolated from Liquidambaris Fructus. Predicted ADME properties revealed a good druggability of these triterpenoids. We identified 18 protein targets which were closely related to breast cancer progression, especially triple-negative, basal-like or advanced stage breast cancers. The triterpenoids could bind with these targets as their inhibitors: hydrophobic skeleton is a favorable factor for them to stabilize at binding site and polar C17- or C3- substituent was necessary for binding. GO enrichment analysis indicated that inhibition of protein tyrosine kinases autophosphorylation might be the primary mechanism for the anti-breast cancer effect of the triterpenoids, and ErbB4 and EGFR were the most relevant targets. CONCLUSIONS: The study revealed that triterpenoids from Liquidambaris Fructus might exert anti-breast cancer effect by directly inhibit multiple protein targets and signaling pathways, especially ErbB4 and EGFR and related pathways. This study also brings up another hint that the traditional applications of Liquidambaris Fructus on hypogalactia should be reassessed systematically because it might suppress rather than promote lactation by inhibiting the activity of ErbB4.

In order to adapt to the environment, plants have evolved many structural designs to improve material utilization. The head infructescence can be described as the Fibonacci sequence, in consistent with plant developmental biology. The lignified framework inside the head infructescence possesses idiographic structural designs that optimize maximum energy efficiency, growing space, seed spreading probability, and enhance the mechanical behavior of the infructescences. In this study, the hierarchical structure and mechanical properties of the infructescence of Liquidambar formosana, commonly called Formosan gum, were investigated. Liquidambar formosana has maple-like leaves and burr-like infructescences. The buckyball-like framework inside infructescence consists of chambers (cells), which support the whole structure under compression. Inspired by the framework, we proposed three models: Thomson model based on the lowest potential energy state, Poisson disc model indicated random distribution, and spherical Fibonacci model represented plant development. Three-dimensional physical entities of these models were fabricated by additive manufacturing. We discovered that under compression testing, these models appear different mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms based on their structures. Spherical Fibonacci model provides superior mechanical properties compared to Thomson and Poisson disc models due to its unique structural design. It is the first time that spherical Fibonacci model brought into the bio-inspired mechanics models through structural analysis and finite element method. The unique construction of Liquidambar formosana has great potential in the designs of novel lightweight, anti-buckling composites, and bio-inspired architectures.
